Jacob showers his brother with gifts both insisting that he accept them as well as refusing to accept his brother's gift of men or joining his brother on the way to seir. Using his own children and herd, he instead convinced his brother that his clan would meet them all there at their own pace. With this ruse, he was able to simultaneously win his brother's forgiveness and effectively avoid an altercation-while putting as much distance as he could between the two...just in case.
